Lightweight containers were used, made of a composite material. These were chosen in a terracotta 'Tuscany' style, and combined with slate-coloured troughs planted with bamboo for screening. Architectural plants such as Phormium and Trachycarpus fortunei form an impact, and are also tough enough to withstand high winds.
The plants have brought the terrace alive, as well as providing privacy.
All the containers are installed with an internal water tank system which means they need to be watered far less frequently, allowing the owners to go on holiday, confident that they will not dry out.
