contemporary courtyard in
warlingham

Brief

The brief was to lose the lawn, and create a contemporary style courtyard with space for dining and relaxing. The heavy clay soil meant that planting and digging proved hard work, and so raised beds were on the wish-list.

Design and outcome

This was an ideal sized garden for losing a lawn, and a combination of grey Indian sandstone and softwood decking provided a variety in materials. Laid on the diagonal, the design makes efficient use of the space. White rendered raised beds incorporate a bench and a small water feature.

A simple black stained arbour adds to the interest and helps to detract from the view of the houses beyond along with the planting.

The compact black rattan furniture ties in neatly.

The fences were stained dark brown to set off the low maintenance planting of Olive tree, Trachycarpus palm, grasses, hydrangeas, lavender and a silver birch tree.

My customer has maintained the garden beautifully, adding fun finishing touches and re-staining the fences and re-painting the rendered walls when required.

"We really enjoy the garden and it was an oasis during lockdown'
