frequently asked
questions

Here are answers to some of my frequently asked questions. If you have any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

How much will a design cost?

This will vary according to the size and complexity of the design required. I will be able to give a quotation for design work after seeing the garden and meeting you at the initial consultation stage.

I break down the cost into the layout plan which is completed first and the planting plan, which I usually prefer to complete once the landscaping has taken place. In my quotation I also detail costs for optional extras such as a 3-d plan, marking out the garden and supervision of the build.

How long will it take to get a design done?

It can take about 4 weeks; first there is the initial consultation, then the survey. I then aim to present a draft plan within 2 weeks, and then another week may be required to finalise the plan.

The timescale could be less or more, depending on the scale of the project and other factors.

Who does the building work?

I have worked with some excellent landscapers over the years and I can recommend them for their expertise and value for money.

If you prefer to employ another landscaper that you know, that is fine, although I have to point out that I do not supervise the work of landscapers that I have not recommended.

When can I expect my new garden to be built?

It is very likely that a good landscaper will have a busy schedule and they are usually booked up for at least 3 months ahead. So it is a good idea to set the whole design process in motion as soon as possible.

How long does it take to build a garden?

Again it does depend on the scape of a project, but a typical small garden can be completed in about 2-3 weeks.

Do you just design or do you do any of the physical work yourself?

I may like to get involved at the clearance stage to salvage any plants and instruct what to remove or keep, and I offer to carry out all aspects of the planting. I also do other general gardening work for border renovations.

Can we do any of the work ourselves?

Yes - from clearance to planting and anything else in between! Myself and the landscapers that I work with are happy to be flexible if there is anything that you would like to do or organise yourself. For example you may like to arrange tree surgery work, build your own pizza oven, or carry out the planting yourself.

Do you work on your own or do you employ people?

Simon and I bring in other gardeners to help us when need be.

Do you supervise the building work?

Normally the landscaper that I recommend will manage the project perfectly well, liaising with our customer and keeping in touch with myself along the way. I am available by email or phone at all times during the build to advise where I can and if an unexpected issue arises and I need to make a site visit, the visit is charged for accordingly.

I do not offer to supervise landscapers that I have not recommended, sorry!

What about maintenance?

I can provide an after-care schedule to help you maintain the garden yourself and I am also very happy to make 1-3 visits per year to trouble-shoot or carry out any pruning or extra planting.
