contemporary outdoor living in

The brief was to create a contemporary style garden to complement the house and the garden building, to incorporate a pizza oven and barbecue, dining area, white rendered raised beds, as much lawn as possible, and a water feature for the rescue goldfish.

Design and outcome

A complete transformation was achieved in this garden, see the before photos at the end of the gallery.

The old fences were removed and replaced with rendered walls and raised beds, topped with cedar baton fencing. Very little of the original garden remains, apart from a mature Laburnum with a architectural leaning trunk which was definitely worth saving.

The new planting includes a cloud pruned Olive, situated in the hottest part of the garden, with grasses, lavender, sedums and cornflowers giving a light airy feel. In the more shady parts, hakonechloa grasses and persicaria provide a long season of interest.

The sleek outdoor kitchen houses a porcelain clad pizza oven, barbecue and granite work surfaces. The paving is a mix of the same London Stone porcelain, in grey 'Silver Contro' and cream 'Slab khaki', plus London Stone composite decking, 'Designboard' in 'mocha' colour. The water feature with a wide waterfall blade is clad with thin porcelain called 'Designclad', again from London Stone.

The finishing touches of the furniture (from John Lewis and Maison du monde) make this garden an impressive contemporary space, perfect for entertaining and relaxing. It also provides a great year-round view from inside the house.

'It's hard to believe we are in the heart of Croydon! We are delighted with the result and will be using the pizza oven at the first opportunity!''
