new build garden in
epsom

Brief

The brief was to provide screening and privacy, a small seating area and a water feature.

Design and outcome

The curved brick wall was a lovely existing feature and the design was built around it. A square hardwood deck was placed in that corner to catch the evening sun.

Planting around the deck began with 3 mature standard Quercus ilex (Holm or Mediterranean Oak) trees for screening. Their evergreen grey-green leaves are complemented by silvery leaved Olive trees, similarly evergreen. They have all grown very quickly and now hardly any houses beyond can be seen. The olives are healthy and hardy as it is such a sheltered spot. The oak trees form a backdrop to other more eye-catching elements in the garden in a similar way to a hedge.

The slate path and water feature tie in with the existing slate patio near the house, and the decking provides a non- clashing contrast in materials.

The colour palette of the planting is white, grey, blues, purples and pinks. A pale pink winter flowering cherry 'Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis rosea' gives long lasting flowers and more screening is supplied by azure blue flowering Ceanothus and a sugar pink Lilac.

The garden now feels private and the planting luxuriant.

'Nancy and Simon have transformed our summer living - they took a small bland space and turned it into a special place for us to enjoy. We love the colour theme of pink, purple and white and they sourced the most amazing Italian Olive trees for us. Thank you to them both, I highly recommend on every level. Lovely people too!'
