Brief

The brief was to create a traditional cottage garden incorporating a Victorian greenhouse, potting shed, vegetable beds, compost area and a new patio for seating near the house.

Design and outcome

The garden was on a slight slope from left to right, so a wall was built on one side to retain the soil after levelling out.

A Prunus hedge and a large Leylandii conifer at the bottom of the garden were removed to create more space and this also revealed a beautiful old stone wall, far too good to be covered up. It is now a great backdrop for the garden.

Designed on a circular theme, the winding path leads you round the garden and creates large planting beds. The simple black stained arches match the black cladding on the converted barn, and are perfect for showing off climbing clematis.

My client's dove-cot and willow boxing hares are great choices as focal points, and they look at home popping up amongst the generous planting of verbena bonariensis, sedums, lavender and hemerocallis.
