Brief

The brief was to create a low maintenance contemporary style garden with screening, space for entertaining and a new garden building.

Design and outcome

The Indian sandstone was replaced with two tone granite which is a much harder stone and won't attract the same amount of algae as sandstone.

The new garden building is clad in dark brown Millboard decking which was also used to replace the original decking steps.

A rope balustrade proved much cheaper than a glass structure and tall troughs with planting create the barrier required to the garden below. The fences were stained a colour to match the 'metallic graphite grey' troughs, supplied by www.livingreendesign.com

Screening trees in the form of pleached hornbeams give privacy and greenery. The leaves are retained on the trees for a long period of time. Lush evergreens and grasses add to the greenery with splashes of colour arriving throughout spring and summer with geums, hemerocallis, campanula, lavender, hebes and astilbe.

The garden is now a relaxing, practical space which feels much bigger. No lawn, easy to sweep paving and an irrigation system means the garden is exceptionally low maintenance. Lighting installed by www.lightyourgarden.co.uk gives a gorgeous ambience for summer evenings.
